Illinois recognizes civil unions

Illinois now recognizes legal commitments between same sex couples just as it does for opposite sex couples who marry. County Clerks in Illinois began issuing licenses to same sex couples on June 1, 2011. Just like marriage licenses, these licenses become effective the day after issuance. The first civil union ceremonies in Illinois were performed on June 2, 2011.
